residential sandblasting projects. Sandblasting jobs can be hazardous to people who are inexperienced.

Safety gear and environmental preparation is an important part of sandblasting. Because sandblasting

is typically handled by professionals, many people have questions about the process.
What Is Sandblasting?
•Sandblasting is a cleaning technique that uses small, solid particles moving at a high velocity to

 smooth a surface and remove bits of material. It is often used to prepare a surface for paint or sealant.

Sandblasting removes any bumps, imperfections or debris from the surface so the finish will appear smooth.

Because a machine is used to blast small sanding particles at the surface, jobs are completed much more

quickly than with manual sanding.


What Material Is Used to Sandblast?
•Silica sand is one of the most common materials used to sandblast exterior projects like houses.

However, it can be dangerous for non-professionals to use silica. Glass beads, sodium bicarbonate,

slag or ground walnut shells are other materials commonly used for interior projects.


Is a Permit Required?

contractors obtain the permit themselves if one is necessary.
Does Sandblasting Damage Wood Trim?

 prevent the blasting material from damaging it. A different sandblasting material is used

on most outdoor surfaces than would be used on wood.


Can Wood Be Sandblasted?
•Wood can be sandblasted, but wood is softer and more delicate, which calls for an experienced

sandblaster. The material used to sandblast wood is different than that used for other projects

and won't cause damage. Wood should be sealed soon after it is sandblasted to prevent it from water damage.


What Is the Difference Between Wet and Dry Sandblasting?
•Wet sandblasting is the most common technique. This method uses water along with blasting

material to smooth exterior surfaces. Dry sandblasting does not involve water and is typically

used indoors or on metal surfaces. Often special permits are needed for dry sandblasting because

 it is more hazardous and messy. If a sandblaster or contractor cannot use the wet method, he

must provide an explanation to obtain a permit.
